Do you Dare 2 C.A.R.E?
It all started with a strong sense of disgust, a garbage bag, and two gloves. The DARE 2 C.A.R.E. (Community, Appreciation and Respect for the Environment) Committee, Brebeuf’s new ‘green team’ have been passionate about wanting a cleaner and greener school community. Although the group is barely a year old, they’ve already made a difference. In Semester 1, they negotiated with a local company called Midpoint Inc. to donate two recycling bin stations, each valued at $1,000. In Semester 2, they initiated a new and improved green and blue bin program which holds everybody accountable by involving all staff and students. Their biggest initiative to date has been the introduction of reusable, stainless steel canteens in the place of plastic water bottles. Since
October, the group has sold over 600 bottles. Every teacher carries a canteen and even the Administration has gone ‘green’! In March, D2C celebrated Earth Hour and participated in Woodbridge’s 3rd Annual Lantern Walk where they were featured in a video presentation. In April, the group ‘dared’ the students with a full week of Earth Week activities aimed at heightening environmental awareness, appreciation and accountability. In May, they participated in flower planting with the City of Vaughan’s Communities in Bloom Program. And in June, they were officially certified as an Eco-School via the Ontario Eco-Schools Program. They ended the year with the City of Vaughan’s Schools in Bloom Achievement Award for outstanding ‘green’ secondary school for Ward 3. On behalf of Dare to C.A.R.E., we would like to thank all administrators, teachers, students, parents, support staff and the Y.C.D.S.B. for their continued support of our green crusade.
